Oscars 2009: Best Adapted Screenplay

The screenplay awards are always my personal favorites. Many of my more favorite films tend to get nominated in these categories (though it tends to occur more in Original Screenplay). Sadly, though, this year’s crop of Adapted Screenplay nominees is fairly uninventive and I definitely think that at least two of these should have been left off the list in favor of others. What should and could have been a more interesting and competitive race has been reduced to a fairly transparent sure-thing of a category.

Gaiman’s Graveyard Book to be adapted by Neil Jordan

Followers of Neil Gaiman’s Twitter stream have had a great couple of days of breaking news from the author. Yesterday, Gaiman announced that his recent book, The Graveyard Book had been awarded The Newbery Medal. This morning, while appearing on Today to promote the win, Gaiman announced that award-winning book will be adapted into a film by writer/director Neil Jordan.

Oscars 2009: Best Supporting Actress

This is probably one of, if not the most, unpredictable races. The Golden Globes and the SAG awards both gave this one to Kate Winslet for The Reader. But Winslet got bumped up to the leading category for the Oscars and now we are left with a real question of who could it be?
