The vacation President

Published by Jessica under Politics

As the sun sets on the Bush presidency, he’s spending his last days at Camp David. It’s understandable. After all, CBS News notes that, all told, Bush will have spent 487 days of his time in office at the Presidential vacation spot. I’m sure he’ll miss it.

In addition, Bush has also spent 490 days of his presidency at his ranch in Crawford, Texas.

That’s 977 days…or 140 weeks…or 2.7 years of vacation. It rounds out to be about 33% of his total days in office. A third of his presidency was spent on vacation. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t had anywhere near that much vacation in the last eight years.

Still, I can comfort myself with the thought that had he actually shown up to work for those 977 days, he might have managed to screw a few more things up.

So long, Mr. President. Now you can spend the rest of your life on vacation!

Is that Obama on a unicorn?

Published by Jessica under Humor,Politics

The JibJab boys are back after making their name in the previous presidential election. I know they try to skewer everyone equally in these things…but putting Barack Obama riding on a unicorn is really just fun for me.

White House says extra parental leave time is “unnecessary”

Published by Jessica under Politics

The House has passed legislation that would give federal employees 4 weeks of paid parental leave time when they adopt or give birth to a child on a vote of 278 to 146. Guess who doesn’t think time with your new kid is important?

And the White House threatened to veto the bill, calling it a “costly, unnecessary, new paid leave entitlement.”

Lessons learned in my absence…or the hubris of George W. Bush

Published by Jessica under Politics

You may have noticed that I’ve been a little bit more absent than usual in the past several days. I was out of town for a family function in Virginia. I didn’t have a whole lot in the way of spare time, but with the few moments I had, I did manage to squeak away to our nation’s capital for little patriotic reverence. The day I flew home I stopped by the National mall to visit the World War II memorial as it was not there on my last visit. It was here that I saw something that infuriated me greatly.

The memorial itself is beautiful. It’s majestic and expansive and solemn. But there’s this one little element that I came upon right when I was entering that made me want to take a belt sander to the rock it was carved into. At the opening (my back to the Washington memorial) and on the right, there is a slab that has what are essentially the credits of the memorial, the name of the designer, the people that engraved. But at the top, in big large letters is carved the name “George W. Bush”. I was fuming. I went to the other war memorials, as well, and I saw no names of presidents stamped into those stones. It especially made me angry because I remember seeing advertisements calling for funds for the memorial before Bush was even in office.

Forever the name of the president with the worst disapproval ratings in history will be stamped into the same stones that recognize the sacrifices of one of our greatest generations for no reason except that they happened to reach their funding and complete construction while he was in office. Me = ANGRY!!!!
