Oscars 2009: Best Actor

Published by Jessica under Movies

Thus begins my first entry in my dissection of this year’s Oscars. I’ll be going through all the major categories – and possibly some minor ones – to discuss likely winners, deserving winners and who got snubbed. I haven’t been this displeased with Oscar nominations in a very long time, and considering how lukewarm I feel about the crop of 2008 films, that’s an impressive feat. So, working my way down the list at oscars.com, we’re starting with Best Actor, which is actually one of the few categories are pretty okay, but still, there’s always things to say.

Joss Whedon’s Cabin in the Woods gets cast members

Published by Jessica under Movies

While Joss Whedon’s new show Dollhouse has been getting a lot of attention, he’s got another project that seems to be coming together. Whedon wrote The Cabin in the Woods, with Cloverfield (and Buffy and Angel) writer Drew Goddard. They describe the project as “a classic horror film” and Goddard will make his directorial debut with the film.

Today, The Hollywood Reporter says that the project has snagged a few cast members. Richard Jenkins, who was extremely busy this year in such films as The Visitor and Burn After Reading, is already on board and Aaron Sorkin alum Bradley Whitford is in final negotiations.

This sounds fantastic to me. I love both of these actors. They may not be big names, but they’re huge talents. It’s also interesting to see a Whedon project kick-start with some new faces. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to see some Buffy/Firefly/Angel alum get jobs on Cabin in the Woods (if for no other reason that some of them seem to be having trouble getting work outside of the Whedon circle), but I like seeing the net widen a little. I’m looking forward to getting more details as this project fleshes out a little.
